The Wilderness Train | Autumn 2025

Join this historical and train-romantic journey through Sweden's picturesque inland and all its experiences.


The journey begins at Stockholm Central and takes you on a fantastic experience through Sweden, from Stockholm to Mora, Östersund, Arvidsjaur, Gällivare, Haparanda at the border with Finland, and onwards to Umeå before returning to Stockholm.

Throughout the journey, you will travel in first-class vintage carriages from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, pulled by locomotives from various eras, including a steam engine. The comfortable carriages offer a unique experience, where you can relax in armchairs and enjoy the passing landscape. The staff greets you in period uniforms, and in the dining car, you’ll experience top-class service from Head Waiter Mårten and his dedicated team.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy a variety of exciting activities and locations, such as a boat tour aboard MS Gustaf Vasa on Lake Siljan, the historic Y1 train journey from Östersund to Lit, a visit to the Inland Railway Museum in Sorsele, Pite Älvsbron, and the Arctic Circle. From the train, you’ll also see the impressive power stations in Porjus and the breathtaking nature of the Laponia World Heritage Site – a stunning cultural and natural highlight.

The trip includes

  • The journey with the Wilderness Train takes us from Stockholm to Mora, then along the Inland Railway to Gällivare, followed by Haparanda, Umeå, and finally Stockholm C. We travel in the Railway Museum’s 40s, 50s, and 60s first-class carriages.
  • We will stay for 7 nights in double rooms at mid-range hotels, with full board, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Activities include visits to the Zorn Museum, Arvidsjaur Church, Lappstaden, Rallarmuseum, Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum, a guided tour of Haparanda and Torneå, and a choice between the Bildmuseum or Arboretum.
  • A tour guide will accompany the entire journey, providing guidance both on and off the train. Transfers between hotels and train stations are included.
  • Please note that the trip requires a minimum number of participants to proceed.

The trip is sold only to individual travelers, not to groups with their own tour leader.

During this trip you travel in the railway museum's first-class carriages from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Here are some things that are good to keep in mind before booking this trip:
The train is not wheelchair adjusted. There are steep steps to get on board the train. While on the train you are seated in low armchairs, the toilet is small and there are long walking distances on board the train. 
It is important that you are able to get on and off the train on your own, as well as walking between the carriages on board without help. Transfer to the hotels are included. 

Program

  • This journey is a co-operation with the Swedish Railway museum in Gävle. Different kind of locomotives are used including a steam locomotive.

  • Day 1: STOCKHOLM - MORA

    Departure in the morning from Stockholm Central Station. We travel in the Railway Museum’s first-class carriages from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Embark on an unforgettable journey from the capital to the heart of Sweden, Dalarna, and the charming town of Mora. Lunch is cooked on the train and served in the restaurant carriage. Upon arrival, enjoy some free time to explore the renowned Zorn Museum before checking in at the inviting Mora Spa Hotel. Later, indulge in a delightful evening cruise aboard the MS Gustaf Wasa on the serene waters of Lake Siljan, where a delicious dinner awaits to complete your day.

  • Day 2: MORA-ÖSTERSUND

    In the morning, we depart from Mora and travel toward Östersund through diverse landscapes and breathtaking scenery. The highlight of the journey is the passage over Storstupet, where the train rolls high above the dramatic ravine with rushing waters.

    From Sveg, a classic steam locomotive takes over, carrying us onward to Östersund—a nostalgic and unforgettable experience that lets you travel back in time.

    We pause for a coffee break in Sörtjärn, where freshly brewed coffee and homemade treats await in a peaceful, scenic setting. Onboard, lunch and dinner are served in the restaurant car, allowing you to enjoy delicious food while admiring the ever-changing views. Accommodation at Clarion Hotel Grand in Östersund.

    MORA-ÖSTERSUND
  • Day: ÖSTERSUND-ARVIDSJAUR

    We begin our journey from Östersund-Lit aboard our charming Y1 railcar, setting the tone for a genuine and cozy experience. After departing Lit, we continue through the magnificent landscape, passing the beautiful Långön—an idyllic spot where tranquility and nature’s beauty embrace us.

    We then follow the Vindel River, whose clear waters meander through the landscape. During a guided tour enriched with musical elements, we delve into the powerful history of this majestic river. Passing the serene Avaviken, we are met with the calm waters reflecting the surroundings, giving us a profound sense of connection with nature.

    Onboard, both lunch and dinner are served by Mårten and his restaurant crew, offering locally inspired dishes that highlight the flavors of the region. Accommodation at Laponia Hotel.

    ÖSTERSUND-ARVIDSJAUR
  • Day 4: ARVIDSJAUR-JOKKMOKK

    We start the day with a delightful sleep-in—a perfect opportunity to rest and recharge for new adventures. For those eager to explore more of Arvidsjaur, there’s a chance to visit the impressive Arvidsjaur Church or the historic Lappstaden, where you can gain insight into Sámi culture and history.

    Onboard the train, both a flavorful lunch and dinner are served, featuring local dishes to provide a true culinary experience during the journey. We pass through Moskosel, where we make a stop at the Rallarmuseum to learn more about the railway’s history. Our journey then takes us to the magnificent Piteälven Bridge and further north to the magical Arctic Circle—a destination that feels like an adventure in itself.

    Finally, we reach our destination for the day—Jokkmokk.

    ARVIDSJAUR-JOKKMOKK
  • Day 5: JOKKMOKK-GÄLLIVARE

    After breakfast, an exciting visit awaits at Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sámi Museum, where you’ll explore Sámi culture and the beauty of the mountain world. You’ll also enjoy a delicious lunch at Ájtte Restaurant, featuring local flavors in an inspiring setting.

    In the afternoon, we continue through the breathtaking Lapland landscape along the legendary Inlandsbanan, passing three UNESCO World Heritage sites and experiencing nature’s grandeur up close.

    By evening, we arrive in Gällivare, where a delightful dinner is served at Grand Hotel Lapland, offering a wonderful dining experience in the heart of town.

    JOKKMOKK-GÄLLIVARE
  • Day 6: GÄLLIVARE - HAPARANDA

    In the morning, our journey continues as we leave the legendary Inlandsbanan and head toward Boden. Traveling through stunning landscapes, we pass charming towns and experience the magic of the untouched northern Swedish wilderness before reaching our destination for the day—Haparanda Tornio.

    Here, at the meeting point of Sweden and Finland, we embark on a guided tour of Haparanda Tornio, exploring the city’s rich cultural heritage and history. Situated along the Torne River, this unique location offers fascinating stories of how the two nations have been intertwined throughout history, providing an unforgettable insight into this cross-border region.

    After an inspiring day, we are ready for a delightful dinner at Haparanda Stadshotell, where the meal is served in a classic and charming setting.

    GÄLLIVARE - HAPARANDA
  • Day 7: HAPARANDA - UMEÅ

    We bid farewell to Haparanda and continue our journey toward the City of Birches, Umeå. As we travel through a landscape that transforms with the changing seasons, we experience the serenity and beauty of northern Sweden’s nature. Lunch is served onboard.

    Upon arrival in Umeå, an exciting visit awaits—either to Bildmuseet, where contemporary art speaks to us in an inspiring and modern setting, or to the Arboretum in Baggböle, a sensory journey through nature where we learn more about the trees and plants that shape this region of Sweden. Whichever visit you choose, you will be met with a rich and diverse experience of both art and nature.

    In the evening, a delightful dinner is served at Elite Hotel Mimer, where the historic ambiance and refined cuisine create a perfect ending to the day.

    HAPARANDA - UMEÅ
  • Day 8: UMEÅ - STOCKHOLM

    We leave Umeå behind and begin our final travel day southward toward Stockholm Central. Onboard the train, the last meals are served in the beautiful dining car—an exquisite lunch and dinner, carefully prepared by Mårten’s team. Here, we savor delicious food while the landscape slowly changes outside the windows.

    The journey takes us through the heart of inland Norrland, where we pass through deep forests, glide past mirror-like lakes, and travel by secluded villages. We cross the mighty Ångerman River, its waters shimmering in the afternoon sun, and further south, the landscape opens up to rolling hills and picturesque farms.

    As we approach the capital, we catch a final glimpse of the beautiful Roslagen countryside before finally arriving in Stockholm, where our journey comes to an end—but the memories of this adventure will live on.
