Wilderness Train | Autumn 2026

Join this historical and train-romantic journey through Sweden's picturesque inland and all its experiences.

The journey begins at Stockholm Central and takes you on a fantastic experience through Sweden, from Stockholm to Mora, Östersund, Arvidsjaur, Jokkmokk, Gällivare, Abisko, Kiruna  and onwards to Umeå before returning to Stockholm.

In collaboration with the Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle, we offer you the Wilderness Train. Travel in first-class museum carriages from the 1940, 50 and 60s, pulled by locomotives from different eras, including steam engines. The comfortable carriages provide a unique experience, where you can sit back in armchairs and enjoy the passing landscapes. The staff welcomes you in period-appropriate uniforms, and in the dining car you will experience high-class service from Maître d’ and the dedicated team.

The journey begins in Stockholm and takes you north through Sweden’s beautiful inland. You pass the charming town of Mora, the heart of Dalarna, and continue on towards Gällivare. Along the way, you discover the hidden gems of the Inland Line: the legendary Vindel River, the vast wetland landscapes of the Laponia World Heritage Site, and impressive untouched nature.

From Abisko and Kiruna, where the mountain peaks are painted in the golden and red tones of autumn, the journey continues through Gällivare towards the coast. Along the way, you are met with crisp air, vast landscapes, and a calm atmosphere where nature shows its most atmospheric side.

Join this unforgettable journey that offers both history, culture, and scenic destinations – an experience beyond the ordinary!

  • Travel by the Vildmark train from Stockholm to Mora, then along the Inland Railway to Gällivare. From Gällivare, continue by train to Abisko and Kiruna, followed by Umeå, and end the journey at Stockholm Central Station.
  • Seating in first-class carriages from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s from the Swedish Railway Museum.
  • Accommodation: 8 nights in double rooms at mid-range hotels.
  • Full board: breakfast, lunch, and dinner included (drinks not included).
  • Activities: visit to the Zorn Museum, Rallarmuseet, Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sámi Museum, lecture about life in Sjaunja today and in the past, hike along the Kungsleden trail in Abisko, visit to a Sámi lavvu, city tour in Kiruna, and visit to the Jukkasjärvi heritage farm.
  • A tour leader accompanies the group throughout the trip, providing guidance and assistance both on the train and during excursions.

The trip is sold to individual travellers only and is not available for groups with their own tour leader.

The carriages are of an older design and are therefore not accessibility adapted. This applies to seating, onboard toilets, the bar, and the restaurant car.
There are relatively steep steps between the platform and the train when boarding and disembarking. It is therefore important that you are able to get on and off the train independently, and that you can move around both onboard and during stops along the route.

During certain parts of the journey, short walks are included in connection with activities and accommodation. We therefore recommend that you are able to walk approximately 750 metres without difficulty.

  • This journey is a co-operation with the Swedish Railway museum in Gävle. Different kind of locomotives are used including a steam locomotive.

We reserve the right to make changes.

  • Day 1: STOCKHOLM - MORA

Depart in the morning from Stockholm Central Station and step aboard a unique rail journey in beautifully preserved first-class carriages from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, part of the Railway Museum’s historic collection. This is more than travel—it is a journey through time.

Between Borlänge and Mora, the experience continues behind a classic steam locomotive, offering a rare and atmospheric passage through the heart of Sweden’s scenic landscapes.

A freshly prepared lunch is served onboard in the elegant restaurant carriage. Upon arrival in Mora, enjoy a guided visit to the renowned Zorn Museum, home to the works and legacy of one of Sweden’s most celebrated artists, Anders Zorn.

Later, check in at the welcoming Mora Hotel & Spa, where the evening concludes with a specially curated dinner in an atmosphere inspired by Zorn’s historic residence.

A journey where heritage, culture, fine dining, and breathtaking landscapes come together to create an unforgettable experience.

    STOCKHOLM - MORA
  • Day 2: MORA-ÖSTERSUND

In the morning, we depart from Mora and journey north toward Östersund, passing through varied landscapes and spectacular natural scenery. One of the absolute highlights of the day is crossing Storstupet, where the train glides high above the dramatic ravine and rushing waters below—an unforgettable moment of the journey.

From Mora to Östersund, a classic diesel locomotive takes over, carrying us through timeless Nordic landscapes all the way to our destination.

A relaxing coffee stop is made in Sörtjärn, where Swedish homemade treats, including freshly baked cinnamon buns, and freshly brewed coffee are served in a peaceful, scenic setting. For those feeling brave, there may even be a refreshing dip in the “Hoan” at Sörtjärn.

Onboard, both lunch and dinner are enjoyed in the restaurant carriage, combining fine dining with ever-changing views outside your window.

The day concludes with accommodation at the centrally located Clarion Hotel Grand in Östersund.

We continue through the vast landscapes of northern Sweden, passing Moskosel where we stop at the Rallarmuseum to discover more about the history of the railway and the people who built it. The journey then takes us across the magnificent Pite River Bridge, before reaching one of the true highlights of the trip—the crossing of the Arctic Circle, a symbolic and unforgettable milestone.

In Abisko, we step out for a walk in the area around Kungsleden (The King’s Trail). Autumn winds move through the valley, shifting the season across the trees—leaves turning gold and deep red, trembling in the wind before drifting to the ground. A fika break is enjoyed in Abisko with beautiful views over Torneträsk, surrounded by wide, open landscapes.

We also visit a traditional Sámi kåta, offering a glimpse into Sámi culture and a way of life shaped by the Arctic north.

The journey then continues to Kiruna—Giruná in Sámi, meaning “ptarmigan”—a town shaped by nature, history, and life at the edge of the Arctic.
