Welcome to a Swedish - Norwegian train expedition

Welcome to a train journey through two countries and along several historic railways. This is the perfect combination for travellers looking to discover the beautiful and varied natural landscape in the Nordic region. The journey starts in Mora and gradually takes you through the beautiful Norwegian landscape with the sea, lakes and mountains up to Bodø and Narvik. From northern Norway the journey turns south and back into Sweden, where you will see the magnificent Abisko National Park and be able to enjoy the midnight light in Gällivare if you travel in the beginning of summer.

OUR TRAIN HOSTS ALONG INLANDSBANAN

You will be accompanied by our committed train hosts on your journey on the Inlandsbanan trains. They will help you find your way around, take your food and coffee orders and also deal with any practical requests as far as possible. The train hosts are knowledgeable and can tell you about places, sights and the scenery along the railway. They do not accompany you on other trains/buses in this trip, or to your accommodations or on excursions, but they are always available on board the Inlandsbanan trains.

This package tour starts and ends in Mora

There are many ways to get to Mora collectively - by train, bus, boat, or plane. You have free arrival time in Mora as your package trip begins with an overnight stay at Mora Hotell & Spa.

In Mora, there are two train stations:
+ Mora Station (the main train station/travel center, about a 15-minute walk to central Mora).
+ Morastrand (in central Mora, not all trains go here, check the details for your specific train).
Inlandsbanans' trains stop at both Mora Station and Morastrand.

We would be happy to help you book your connecting trains. If you prefer to book your connecting trains on your own, we recommend using SJ' website.

If you are traveling to Mora by car, we recommend the long-term parking at Mora Station (travel center). More information about parking in Mora can be found here under the heading "Parking solution for traveling with the inland railway."

You will arrive at Mora Station on the last day of your journey around lunchtime. If you want to stay and explore Mora, we can help you add a hotel night here.

  • Day 1*: Arrival Mora

    Welcome to Mora, a highlight in Dalecarlia. You travel here on your own. The trip starts with an overnight stay at Mora hotel. Take the opportunity to take an evening stroll along beautiful lake Siljan.

  • Day 2*: Inlandsbanan | Mora -Östersund

    Because of its delightful location on the shore of Lake Siljan and its rich cultural heritage there is much to see and do in Mora. We suggest you to make time for a visit to Zorn museum that is included in the package trip. But also Vasaloppet museum (Vasaloppet is the world’s oldest and biggest ski race) or a walk along beautiful Lake Siljan. In the afternoon the journey starts by train through the county of Härjedalen. Here you will get close to the wilderness, and wildlife of Sweden. In the evening we arrive at Östersund, the residential town of the county of Jämtland. You can also start your travels in Östersund on selected dates.

  • Day 3: Summer city Östersund

    Look forward to a whole day of new experiences in Östersund. Stroll up to Jamtli History Land to meet people and see places from many different periods (entry included in package). The Storsjöhyttan glassworks is within walking distance down by the marina. On a clear day we recommend visiting Arctura, the highest restaurant in Östersund, with view for miles around over mountains, lakes and forests.

  • Day 4: Mittbanan and Meråkerbanen | Östersund-Trondheim

    Today’s journey will take you into Norway via well-known ski resorts such as Åre and Storlien. In Trondheim we recommend you to explore the fantastic Nidarosdomen, the Cathedral of Trondheim, and taking a stroll along Nidelven waterfront.

  • Day 5: Nordlandsbanen | Trondheim-Bodö

    In the morning you will start your travel along Nordlandsbanen, which runs from Trondheim in the south to Bodø in the north. On this beautiful train journey you will experience the magnificent natural landscape of northern Norway, with its lakes and mountains. The route has been said to be one of the most beautiful train trips in Europe. Before you arrive at your final destination Bodø, in the evening, you will have crossed the Arctic Circle for the first time on this trip.

  • Day 6: Bus | Bodö-Narvik

    Today you go by bus from Bodø to Narvik. The bus trip takes you across small mountain passes, through pretty villages, along fjords and through tunnels. A 25 minute ferry ride will take you across Tysfjorden – with views of mountain tops all around.

  • Day 7: Ofotbanen and Malmbanan | Narvik-Gällivare

    At mid day, the journey continues back into Sweden on Ofotbanen and Malmbanan. On the Norwegian side of the border the train travels along the mountains with a spectacular view across the fjords. After crossing the national border to Sweden, you reach Abisko National Park where you (if the weather allows) gets to see the beautiful Lapporten, before arriving in Gällivare late in the afternoon.

  • Day 8: Inlandsbanan | Gällivare-Arvidsjaur

    Today you travel along Inlandsbanan to Arvidsjaur. You will cross the Arctic Circle once more. The natural landscape in Sweden is completely different from the one you encountered on your journey in Norway. You will get time to visit the Navvy museum in Moskosel.

  • Day 9: Inlandsbanan | Arvidsjaur-Östersund

    If you didn’t get the time to visit Lappstaden the day before you have time before the train departs at lunchtime. At the first short stop in Sorsele you can visit the Inlandsbanan Museum. During the trip through inland Sweden our train hosts will tell you about the different places we pass on the journey, and we will make stops for dinner at award winning Bergmans' fisk & vilt.

  • Day 10*: Inlandsbanan | Östersund-Mora

    For those who started the travel in Östersund the trip ends here. For the rest the train will depart towards Mora after breakfast.
