Welcome to Gällivare and the start of your journey with Inlandsbanan. Depending on when you arrive in Gällivare, you may have time to experience the rich culture and beautiful nature. Walk along the Cultural Trail by the Vassara River, discover the ongoing community transformation, or rent a kayak and enjoy the view of Mount Dundret. Be sure to visit the tourist center, located in Norrskensgallerian, where friendly staff will provide you with plenty of tips on experiences and attractions in Gällivare. If you want guided experiences, these should be booked in advance. For inspiration: Visit Gallivare. We highly recommend hiking on Dundret, where you can enjoy breathtaking views and experience the midnight sun for about a month starting from early June. After an early breakfast at the hotel, the Inlandsbanan departs for Jokkmokk, which is about a 1.5-hour journey. It's an 800-meter walk to hotell Jokkmokk. See map. In Jokkmokk, there is plenty to see and experience. Visit Jokkmokks Tenn to see how incredible craftsmanship is done, and take a walk to the two churches, each with its own fascinating history. Admission to Ájtte—Swedish mountain- and Sámi museum is included. It's a 800-meter walk from the hotel. See map. For nature enthusiasts, we recommend Fjällträdgården (The Mountain Garden), as seen in the picture. In Jokkmokk centre you can find Sámi crafts and beautiful souvenirs. In the morning, the train departs, taking you through Lapland down to Vilhelmina. Just south of Jokkmokk, you’ll cross the Arctic Circle, where the train makes a stop. The journey goes through wildlife-rich landscapes, so keep an eye out for predators! They are shy animals, so even if you don’t see them, you can be sure they see the train.
Along the way south, the train also stops at classic Inlandsbanan stops such as the Navvy Museum in Moskosel and the Inlandsbanan Museum in Sorsele. In addition, the train will make stops for lunch in Arvidsjaur and dinner at Bergmans Fisk & Vilt at Vilhelmina Norra, the station before the day’s final destination. You will arrive in Vilhelmina in the early evening. It's a 750-meter walk uphill to hotell Wilhelmina. See map.
Since the train doesn’t depart until early evening, you have plenty of time to spend in Vilhelmina. We recommend visiting the heritage museum, the church, and the old church town Kyrkstaden. The journey back to Östersund includes passing through Strömsund Municipality. The natural landscape here inspired Beppe Wolgers for the film about Dunderklumpen. Östersund is a true summer city with a great deal to offer. For inspiration: Visit Östersund. We recommend a visit to Jamtli History Land and museum where you get to travel back in time, entry is included. It's a 1,3 km walk there from the hotel. See map. Or perhaps you want to discover the city on your own? Bikes can be hired from the tourist information office, where you can also pick up a map of cycling routes. Dinner is best enjoyed at one of the city’s many outdoor restaurant areas.
After an early breakfast at the hotel, you board the train for the last leg of the journey with Inlandsbanan, which marks the end of the tour. At the coffee stop at Fågelsjö we highly recommend their famous cinnamon buns! The train will take you through the county of Härjedalen where you will come real close to the wilderness, traveling through deep forests before arriving in Mora Station around lunchtime.
