Welcome to Gällivare, the northern start of Inlandsbanan. We recommend you to arrive early to Gällivare so you have time to discover the rich culture and beautiful nature. In the evening we highly recommend a walk down the river or a trip to the mountain Dundret. If travelling in beginning of summer you will see the midnight sun, a real highlight.
After an early breakfast the Inlandsbanan train will take you to Jokkmokk. In Jokkmokk there are lots of things to see, do and eat.
If you want to learn about the Sámi culture and Laponia it’s one of the best places to do. Visit Jokkmokks Tenn who make amazing tin handicrafts. The entrance fee to the Swedish Mountain and Sami museum Ájtte, is included. On the way from the hotel to the railway station you can buy sami handicraft and nice souvenirs at the local market.
Travel along Inlandsbanan through Swedish Lapland to Vilhelmina. Just south of Jokkmokk you will cross the Arctic Circle and you will later pass Moskosel and the museum "Rallarmuséet".
In Vilhelmina you will have time to visit both "Hembygdsmuseet" museum and the old church village "Kyrkstan" before the train towards Östersund departures. You will now leave Swedish Lapland and in the evening you will arrive to the residential city of the county of Jämtland - Östersund, by Lake Storsjön.
Östersund is marketed as a winter city, but it is also a beautiful summer city with a wide range of activities. You can take a walk to Jamtli outdoor museum where you meet people and environments in a historic setting, entrance is included in the package trip. Or why not discover the city of Östersund on your own? Maybe look for the Great Lake beast in Storsjön! There are plenty of excellent restaurants and cafeterias when you get hungry or need to rest your legs.
After a tasty breakfast at the hotel, you board the train for the last leg of the journey with Inlandsbanan, which marks the end of the tour. The train will take you through the county of Härjedalen where you will come real close to the wilderness, traveling through bear forests before arriving in Mora, by lake Siljan.Here you get to explore the heart of Dalecarlia on your own. Selected dates you can also take the train to Inlandsbanans most southern point Kristinehamn.
